What is the School Council?
The school council works to make improvements to our school and the way we do things at St Joseph’s. We look around for things that could be better and discuss what to do. Everyone gets a chance to speak and when we’ve finished we vote on the best ideas and then start working on changing things. Sometimes we invite adults in our school to attend our meetings.
We try to be very professional in the council so we use a lot of business words. Hopefully this will help.
Agenda - a list of things to talk about
Councillor - someone who has been voted for to work for their class mates on the school council
Minutes - the notes taken during a meeting so people can see what goes on
Motion - an idea for the council to discuss
Who are the School Councillors?
Every year we run an election campaign to vote for two new representatives for each class. A good representative will speak at the council meetings about things that their class is interested in. They will also tell their class about what is going on in the council meetings and share what they are working on with their class.

Our Ideas in Action
What we achieved in Autumn 1 2021…
Children’s Voice | School Council Action |
On the KS2 yard, we find it difficult to read the numbers on the cards held up by the dinner staff at lunchtime. | We made bigger cards with bolder numbers. |
Please bring back Jam-Roly Poly! | Asked Angie, our cook, to include a variety of desserts on our menu after Christmas. We would really love to see jam roly-poly, trifle, rice pudding and arctic roll. Watch this space… |
We have so many ideas that we want to share. | Suggestion boxes have been issued to all of our classes. Make sure you share your ideas! The councillors will bring your suggestion slips to our meeting at least once a term. |
We would like to have more play equipment to use at playtime and at dinnertime. We would also like to play more games. | There is now equipment on both KS1 and KS2 playground at playtime and dinnertimes. Our playground friends and dinner staff have a lot of games to share with you too. Check their display board, outside the hall, for our ‘Craze of the Week’. |
