Exploring One of the World’s Most Famous Universities

St Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s POW Ambassadors recently enjoyed an exciting and inspiring visit to the University of Cambridge.

Bathed in glorious sunshine, the group toured the historic university grounds and discovered what life is really like as a university student. Along the way, they even learned an interesting fact about student life at Cambridge, discovering that accommodation is cleaned for students.

Learning from a Leading Astronomer

Following a delicious lunch in a grand and traditional dining hall, the ambassadors visited the Institute of Astronomy, where they met Professor Carole Haswell.

Professor Haswell, who was born nearby in Saltburn, shared fascinating insights into her career as an astronomer and explained what it is like to search for planets as part of her work.

A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to use a massive telescope to safely observe the sun, giving pupils a memorable glimpse into the world of astronomy and scientific research.

Dreaming Big for the Future

An impromptu stop at an OK Diner helped keep spirits high during the journey home and rounded off a wonderful day of exploration and discovery.

The visit encouraged pupils to think ambitiously about their futures and the opportunities available to them.

The ambassadors returned with an inspiring message for everyone at St Joseph’s: Dream big and reach for the stars!
