Growing Skills and Confidence Outdoors

Over the past five sessions, pupils in the Bushcraft Club at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy in Norton have taken part in a wide range of outdoor learning activities. These experiences have helped them grow in confidence, teamwork and appreciation for the natural world.

Learning Through Practical Experiences

Throughout the half term, pupils explored a variety of exciting activities, including:

  • Fire‑Making Skills – Learning about fire safety and creating a safe, controlled flame using natural materials
  • Nature Hunts – Identifying plants, mini‑beasts and signs of local wildlife
  • Nail Art Craft – Creating artwork using wooden discs, nails and string to develop focus and fine‑motor skills
  • Outdoor Team Challenges – Building shelters, solving problems and completing tasks collaboratively
  • Environmental Awareness – Understanding how to care for outdoor spaces, leave no trace and act as caretakers of nature

Values at the Heart of Learning

Alongside practical skills, pupils reflected on how their learning connects to Catholic Social Teaching and promotes key British Values, such as cooperation, responsibility and respect.

Looking Ahead

The pupils have shown fantastic enthusiasm throughout the half term, and we are incredibly proud of their resilience, teamwork and growing love for the outdoors. We look forward to many more bushcraft adventures ahead!
