Stepping Back in Time on Our School Grounds

Year 3 and 4 pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy in Norton stepped back in time this week as they took part in an unforgettable Stone Age Primitive Skills Workshop - three action-packed days that brought their history learning to life in the most exciting way.

A Real Taste of Stone Age Life

Each class - Class 5, Class 6 and Class 7 - enjoyed a fully immersive outdoor experience, exploring what life was like for early humans. The children threw themselves into every practical task, gaining new skills and plenty of muddy hands along the way!

They took part in:

Primitive fire lighting
Building hunter-gatherer shelters
Making and cooking ancient bread
Creating simple tools & exploring Stone Age artefacts

Every activity encouraged curiosity, resilience and hands-on discovery - making history feel real, relevant and wonderfully messy.

Teamwork, Problem-Solving and Lots of Enthusiasm

The excitement on the children’s faces was priceless. Whether they were kneading dough, collecting materials for shelters or experimenting with natural tools, they showed brilliant teamwork and eagerness to learn. Teachers were incredibly proud of how engaged and enthusiastic everyone was throughout the workshop.

Linking Learning to Catholic Social Teaching

A beautiful aspect of the workshop was how naturally it connected to Catholic Social Teaching. The children:

  • worked together
  • shared resources
  • supported one another
  • showed care for the natural world

Just as early human communities relied on cooperation to survive, our pupils discovered the importance of helping one another and valuing creation.

A Memorable Learning Experience

The three days were filled with discovery, teamwork and fun - an experience the children won’t soon forget. From sparking their own fires to building shelters, they brought their Stone Age learning to life in the most authentic way possible.

What a brilliant journey into the past!
