Spanish

Subject Lead: Mrs Hall

At St. Joseph’s, we are committed to ensuring the curriculum is purposeful, progressive and empowering for every child. We value all of our children and celebrate diversity of experience, need, interest, and achievement. Our curriculum provokes curiosity and excitement for all children at St. Joseph’s. We recognise that we are building the foundations for life-long learning with Christ at the centre. A shared love of literature throughout school and our faith life and Gospel values, Trust Character Virtues and British Values, sits alongside our curriculum drivers. Our curriculum drivers are what makes our curriculum unique to us here at St. Joseph’s. They are woven through all that we do and underpin our shared belief that our role is to support and help our children to understand their place within their local town, their country and in their world as a global citizen; to have experiences that become part of their life story; and aspire to achieve their very best, having been shown that there is a world of possibility awaiting them, outside of the school gates.

Early Years

At St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy children begin their language journey with Spanish in Reception Class, and are introduced to the language through songs, stories and rhymes.

Early Years Language Objectives:

  • Responding to simple, known songs with gesture
  • Responding with actions to stories read aloud with visual support
  • Experimenting with Spanish sounds through songs and games
  • Recognising simple greetings

Key Stage 1

Spanish is taught weekly in Key Stage 1. The children continue to learn Spanish through new songs, stories and games. The focus in Key Stage 1 is building the children’s confidence to speak Spanish with correct pronunciation as well as developing vocabulary.

KS1 Language Objectives:

  • Responding and joining in with a variety of known and new songs with gestures to show understanding
  • Responding with actions to stories read aloud
  • Exchanging simple greetings
  • Responding to a familiar question
  • Using Spanish vowel sounds through songs and games

Key Stage 2

Spanish is taught weekly in Key Stage 2. Lessons are planned so children are introduced to new vocabulary in each lesson and activities are designed so children can practise these new words, building on previous learning. The main focus in all lessons is on speaking and listening, particularly with a partner. Lessons are interactive and Spanish is spoken as much as possible.

KS2 Language Objectives:

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions; respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
  • Speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words introduced into familiar written material, including using a dictionary
  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
  • Write words from memory and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
