At St. Joseph’s, we are committed to ensuring the curriculum is purposeful, progressive and empowering for every child. We recognise that we are building the foundations for life-long learning with Christ at the centre. A shared love of literature throughout school and our faith life and Gospel values, Trust Character Virtues and British Values, sits alongside our curriculum drivers. Our curriculum drivers are what makes our curriculum unique to us here at St. Joseph’s. They are woven through all that we do and underpin our shared belief that our role is to support and help our children to understand their place within their local town, their country and in their world as a global citizen; to have experiences that become part of their life story; and aspire to achieve their very best, having been shown that there is a world of possibility awaiting them, outside of the school gates.

Intent

At St Joseph’s Catholic Academy, we intend for children to:

  • be engaged, inspired and challenged in their artwork
  • express themselves through their use of art
  • develop knowledge and understanding of artists, craft makers and designers
  • develop independence, initiative and originality in their artwork

Implementation

At St. Joseph's we follow the Art and Design National Curriculum, we teach this through four strands:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printing
  • Sculpture and Collage

Drawing and Painting
3D Art – this includes sculpture and textiles
Digital Art

Each term of learning begins in the same way with children studying an artist’s work in detail. The artist is chosen because their work is a strong example of a particular skill across the strands and areas which is being taught. See St. Joseph's;

Following a detailed understanding of the artist’s work, pupils will then have the opportunity to recreate the artwork themselves using similar techniques as the artist.

Children then move to the innovate stage where they explore a range of techniques to create their own artwork based on the piece being studied.

Once the pupils have developed confidence in the new skills taught, they then interpret the artwork to create individual pieces using and applying new knowledge and skills.

Finally the children evaluate their artwork.

All artwork is then displayed around the school to showcase the children's work.

Where appropriate, the art curriculum makes links with history, science and geography if this helps children understand an artist more fully.

Impact

Engaged children who are all challenged

  • Children who can talk about their knowledge and understanding of artists, craftspeople and designers from a range of times and cultures, and apply this knowledge to their own work
  • The use of sketchbooks shows progression throughout the school and enables the children to review and evaluate their work to produce high-quality outcomes.
  • Opportunities for children to refine and develop their techniques over time is supported by effective lesson sequencing and progression between year groups.

At St Joseph’s we offer a variety of enrichment opportunities for Art and Design. We have an Art Club at different points throughout the school year, which gives children the opportunity to further develop their skills.

Throughout Advent, we participate in a local art scheme ‘Love Norton Advent Trail,’ where children design stained glass windows, which are then displayed in shops and restaurants around Norton village.
